About Your Skin | About Irregular Pigmentation

You may have noticed some brown spots or darker areas on your skin. Doctors call this irregular pigmentation and it usually comes from years in the sun. The good news is, these spots are harmless.

Irregular pigmentation is:

  • Darker brown than your regular skin color
  • Flat, not raised
  • Often found on the face

In contrast, brown/black spots that are "raised" above the skin are called seborrheic keratoses. These spots are also harmless. Here are some examples of seborrheic keratoses.

Brown or black spots that look mole-like and have irregular colors or borders may be melanomas and should be examined by your skin specialist. Get more information on melanoma detection.
